Is a biogas plant worth it with 4 cows?
I have 4 cows and the dung pile is a problem. Would a small biogas plant be worth building, or is compost better?

With 4 cows, a small family biogas plant can work. A family plant usually needs the dung of about 3–5 cows a day, mixed with an equal amount of water.
What you get:
- Cooking gas for a family most days, replacing firewood, LPG or dung cakes, with less smoke in the kitchen.
- Slurry, an excellent fertiliser for Napier and fodder plots or vegetables.
The catch is the upfront cost. Ask your upazila livestock or agriculture office, or local development organisations, whether a support or loan programme is available in your area.
If that isn't possible yet, start with a covered compost pit: layer the dung with straw and leftover fodder, keep it moist but not wet, and turn it every few weeks. It is ready in about 2–3 months and costs almost nothing. Vermicompost is another option if vegetable growers or nurseries near you buy it.
